PROJECTS:

Educating and Empowering Providers to Provide the Best Standard of Care for Deaf Signing Patients

Drawing on her own experience as a sign language interpreter, as well as local and federal laws, Dr. Epperson developed a guideline for residents in the use of sign language interpreters. The guideline included relative laws and requirements, best practices for working with D/deaf patients, and resources to act as quick guide residents could use to access more information and/or interpreters for their practice

COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics

A resident-led initiative grew into partnerships with the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care, Unity-Health, the Arkansas Minority Health Commission, and the Arkansas Department of Health to promote widespread and equitable distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine. Thousands of people have been vaccinated in our mass vaccination clinics and smaller satellite clinics were helped for underserved groups including our Black and Spanish-Speaking communities.

Survey study: resident perceptions and expectations of the GME DIC

An IRB-approved survey was distributed to query residents regarding their expectations for the GME Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The purpose of this survey was to learn from residents how this committee can effectively serve the needs of our residents.

Resident biography updates and resident video biographies

This resident-initiated project highlights the diversity within the GME department. A diverse group of residents has also been showcased in short videos to show off a brief snapshot of our diverse backgrounds.

Knowledge Assessment of Interpretation Services Among Medical Residents

The purpose of this study was to assess residents’ knowledge of the interpretation services available at the hospital. An educational program was created to increase resident knowledge of the interpretation services available, provide instruction on how to access the services, and to increase the utilization of interpretation services by residents. This study was presented at the American Psychiatric Association 2021 (Virtual) Annual Meeting.
