We deliver miracles every day. Located at White County Medical Center, our New Life Center provides state-of-the-art care to moms and newborns for a safe birthing experience.

At Newport:

Dr. Karen Jones proudly provides care for patients during their pregnancy, care following delivery, as well as additional women’s health services. We are able to provide a seamless transition for your delivery at Unity Health - White County Medical Center or to the hospital of your choice.

Unity Health-White County Medical Center also now serves neonatal infants and families with its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, staffed with our two neonatologists. The new Unity Health-White County Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit allows us to care for our smallest patients locally, so families can keep their infants close to home for the support and care they need.

Pregnancy and sleep problems

Get more ZZZs when you're sleeping for 2

When you're pregnant, your body goes through changes that can make sleeping difficult. Do you know what symptoms to expect when you're expecting—and what you can do to ease them? Select a + to find out.

Nasal congestion:

Your blood supply increases during pregnancy. This and hormone changes can cause a stuffy nose and nosebleeds as your nose swells or dries out.

What you can do: Gently blow your nose. Drink fluids, and use a cool mist humidifier.

Heartburn:

Hormones relax the valve between the esophagus and stomach. In your second and third trimesters, the growing baby also pushes on the stomach. These changes make it easier for food and acid to come back up and cause heartburn.

What you can do: Eat several small meals daily instead of three large ones. Avoid citrus, greasy, fried or spicy foods. Don't lie down right after eating.

Frequent urination:

As your baby grows and changes position, the pressure on your bladder increases.

What you can do: Do Kegel exercises to tone pelvic muscles. Drink fewer fluids before bedtime.

Aching back, pelvis and hips:

Your growing belly can strain your back. And the joints in your pelvis are relaxing in preparation for childbirth.

What you can do: Apply heat. Sleep with pillows behind your back and between your knees.

Leg cramps:

Your growing baby puts pressure on the nerves and blood vessels that go to your legs. This may be the cause of leg cramps in pregnancy. Lack of fluids and blood circulation problems can also cause leg cramps.

What you can do: Sleep on your side instead of your back. Gently stretch your leg muscles. Drink plenty of fluids. Get regular exercise (with your provider's OK).

Restless legs syndrome (RLS):

This sleep disorder is related to low levels of folic acid and iron. Symptoms of RLS include unpleasant feelings in the legs. Your legs may feel tingly or achy.

What you can do: Get enough folic acid and iron in your diet to prevent RLS. Your baby needs them too. Ask your provider what you can do if you develop RLS.

We want all moms to have the most comfortable birthing experience possible. The New Life Center has the latest in fetal monitoring, including wireless fetal monitoring capabilities, so you can get up and walk around before the baby arrives.

To ensure that you have everything you need, our birthing suites are equipped with a:

  • Birthing bed.
  • Recliner.
  • Rocking chair.
  • Sleeper-bed sofa for support partners.

We also offer some Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum rooms, which feature their own private bathrooms and showers.

An experienced staff dedicated to your care

We have one of the finest maternity teams in the region. Our highly skilled physicians and nurses are trained to perform both vaginal and C-section deliveries.

And because we know this is a special experience for your growing family, our staff will do its utmost to follow your unique birth plan. After your baby is born, we're here to help you recover and master breastfeeding.

Our highly trained staff includes:

  • Board-certified OB-GYN physicians.
  • A board-certified family practice physician.
  • Two neonatologists
  • An IBCLC (International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant) at White County Medical Center.
  • Certified lactation counselors.

Childbirth preparation classes for the whole family

You and your family are provided access to our online childbirth education classes both before and after delivery.

White County Medical Center offers online childbirth classes.

Additional classes such as breastfeeding, sibling and infant CPR/safety classes, as well as instruction in prenatal yoga, may be offered at White County Medical Center. When available, these classes are taught by our experienced nurses and are offered year-round.
